THE NEXT FOUR YEARS START HEREAn ascent of Mount Everest (29,028 feet) officially starts from Base Camp, which is located at 17,598 feet. This is where climbers acclimate to their surroundings, organize their thoughts, and gather their energy stores to ascend to the summit, almost twelve thousand feet above. If you want to stand on top of Everest, a tremendous amount of effort lies between Base Camp and summit day.
Though Everest Base Camp is the beginning of an epic challenge, it is also an accomplishment of its own. To stake your tent at Base Camp represents months of training, days or weeks of travel, and immense personal sacrifice. Though the challenge begins at Base Camp, the journey started long ago.The same is true of your first year at Pepperdine. As an incoming Pepperdine first year student, you've worked hard for many years. You've studied for twelve years of school, met deadlines, written essays, performed your best, and made immense personal sacrifices of your own. Every ounce of sweat, passion & grit you've invested has paid off, and here you are.
Welcome. Base Camp is specifically designed for Pepperdine first year students & transfer students. It's your time to reflect on the past and dream for the future. It's a time to root yourself in a faith community, because you will need them when the going gets tough. It's an opportunity to celebrate the effort you've put in and gather your resolve for the next big challenge: four years of college at Pepperdine University. It's a time to set your sights on the summit. |
Discover Malibu.
Base Camp takes place on a portion of the Backbone Trail in Malibu, California. Our trailhead is located on the ocean at Sycamore Canyon, where we will hike four miles in to Danielson Ranch, our campground. We will hike back out via the same trail on Sunday morning. Please note sections of this hike are moderately difficult hike and you will be carrying a backpack.

Base Camp is open to Pepperdine first year students and transfer students only. This is your chance to get to know other students in your class and explore the wilderness around Malibu.
|
Start strong.
One of the most important aspects of any ascent is your climbing community. Base Camp will introduce you to others who are serious about setting their foundation in Christ for the coming years. It's an opportunity to commit to yourself and others that you'll need Jesus to accomplish your goal.
|
Carry what you need.
Base Camp is a backpacking trip, meaning you carry your own gear to the campground. You are required to carry a sleeping bag and at least 2 liters of water. We strongly recommend that you also pack a sleeping pad, change of clothes, layers of warm clothing for cold nights, flashlight or headlamp, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses & hiking snacks. Remember to check the weather report and pack accordingly.
|
We'll provide the rest.
While you're hiking in with your gear, we have arranged one supply vehicle to drop off our food and tents for the weekend. Drinkable water is available at the campground. The campground has flushing toilets, *rustic* showers, picnic tables, running water, and an outdoor cooking facility.
